Position Description:
The Building Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, monitoring, and repair of
building systems including HVAC, boilers, chillers, electrical, plumbing, and life-safety
equipment. This role ensures a safe, efficient, and comfortable environment for building
occupants while complying with all applicable codes and regulations. The Building Engineer will
also be responsible for:
• Operating, monitoring, maintaining, and repairing:
- HVAC systems (chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air handlers)
- Electrical systems, generators, and lighting
- Plumbing systems and pumps
- Building automation systems (BAS/BMS)
• Performing preventive maintenance and responding to emergency repairs.
• Reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
• Inspecting building systems to identify issues and ensure optimal performance.
• Monitoring energy usage and assisting with energy efficiency initiatives.
• Maintaining accurate logs, work orders, and maintenance records.
• Responding promptly to alarms, system failures, or occupant service requests.
• Conducting routine safety inspections and testing of equipment.
• Ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal codes (OSHA, EPA, building codes).
• Coordinating with contractors, vendors, and inspectors as necessary.
• Supporting building management during inspections and audits.
• Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized mechanical space.
Non-Essential Functions
• Responding to radio calls for assistance from museum staff
• Attending mandatory staff meetings
• Performing cleaning and maintenance duties when porters are not present
• Assisting with exhibit installation and deinstallation when needed
Eligibility Requirements
• Full-time status, 40 hours per week:
- 2:00pm-10:00pm (Friday, Saturday and Sunday)
- 10:00pm-6:00am (Monday and Tuesday)
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces and stand for extended periods
• Experience using forklifts, scissor lifts and other aerial lifts
Position Requirements
• 3-5 years of experience operating and maintaining commercial or industrial building
systems
• Technical or Trade School diploma or equivalent
• Strong knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical systems
• Proficiency using computerized BAS (Building Management Systems)
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Required Competencies: Must be eligible to join the International Union of Operating
Engineers Local 835. Philadelphia Grade A Engineer License required.
Other Duties: Assisting with outdoor maintenance as required and assisting event staff with
event setup as needed.
Status: Full-time
