The Supportive Housing Network of New York
The Supportive Housing Network of New York (the Network) is a membership organization representing over 200 nonprofits statewide who develop, own and operate 55,000 units of supportive housing. The Network uses advocacy, public education, training, technical assistance, research, and policy analysis to increase the public’s understanding of supportive housing – deeply affordable housing with onsite, voluntary social services for people who have experienced homelessness and who face the greatest barriers to obtaining and maintaining housing – those living with a serious mental health diagnoses, people who use substances, youth aging out of foster care, veterans, survivors of domestic violence and others. The Network identifies and shares best practices that continually improve the model’s effectiveness and, most importantly, encourages the creation of enough supportive housing to end homelessness among the most vulnerable New Yorkers.
The Executive Director reports directly to the Chair of the Board of Directors and coordinates with the Network’s board, staff and members to provide executive leadership and strategic vision for the organization. A seasoned public speaker, negotiator and spokesperson, the Executive Director is a strong external presence, who establishes mutually beneficial partnerships and coalitions with the broader community, government agencies, funders, and other external partners. As a manager, they set clear roles, responsibilities and expectations. The Executive Director solicits feedback and fosters a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring every staff member’s voice is heard and acknowledged.
Candidates should have a track record of success in senior-level roles, with experience in supportive and affordable housing, homeless services, behavioral health, or other related social services areas.
This position is located in New York City, with a hybrid work schedule. Occasional travel to Albany and Washington, D.C. is required.

Executive Leadership & Strategic Vision
• Identify and understand the social, economic, and political trends that impact homelessness and supportive housing and leverage their relationships to amplify the organization’s impact.
• Advocate for and support non-profit members and the critical role they play in the development, ownership and management of supportive housing.
• Develop deep networks, build strategic alliances, and collaborate with stakeholders.
• Work with DEIA committee, staff, board and membership to further effort on reaching the organization’s DEIA goals.
• Respond with creativity and initiative to emerging trends.
• Establish strong and effective working relationships with external partners, including City and State officials.
• Shape relevant government policies and align them with the activities of the Network’s members.
• Support overall Board and Executive Committee engagement, relationship management and communications. Ensure that Board members are informed, connected and enthusiastic.
• Effectively execute governance responsibilities. Oversee Board nominations process with Nominating Committee.
Policy, Advocacy and Programs
• Develop and oversee the Network’s core response to emerging policy issues that present strategic challenges and opportunities for our members.
• Be the respected voice for the Network and its members within policy and advocacy discussions and negotiations in collaboration with the staff.
• Effectively advance the Network’s policy and advocacy agenda with state, federal and local officials to advance supportive housing in New York State.
• Demonstrate high quality analysis and good judgment in formulating and implementing the Network’s policy and advocacy positions.
• Encourage a work environment that fosters collaboration.
• Encourage and cultivate staff to take the lead on projects and represent the Network externally.
• Ensure that each staff member is empowered to make decisions, can offer actionable feedback, and share credit for team success.
• Effectively delegate work to staff with appropriate levels of freedom, authority and responsibility.
• Develop career pathways that foster professional growth and development.
Financial Management and Fundraising
• Maintain strong, positive relationships with foundation and corporate supporters.
• Identify and successfully pursue new funding opportunities.
• Actively participate in the coordination of the Network’s main events which include the Annual Meeting, Annual Supportive Housing Conference, which usually has 1600 attendees and the Annual Gala, which usually has 600 attendees.
• Ensure adequate financial controls and maintain sound financial practices including operating within the approved budget.
• At least 5 years of progressive senior leadership experience in a non-profit, advocacy or membership organization.
• Understanding of supportive housing from a development, operational or service perspective.
• Excellent strategic thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the depth to work with stakeholders at all levels, including people with lived experience.
• Ability to simultaneously manage long-term strategic vision and understand current on-the-ground emerging issues.
• Knowledge of New York State’s policy and programmatic landscape and strong connections with supportive housing community and government leaders.
• Experience working within broad-based coalitions.
• Strong public speaking and oral communications skills as well as strong written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to consider feedback from staff members at all levels in the organization.
